They were going along until they met a forge and Our Lord asked the Smith to make a shoe for the ass. He handed him a bar of gold to make it but he did not accept it. He said he would make it with a piece of iron. He could not find any suitable piece and he cut two inches off the arm of the tongs and made the shoe. It happened to be of a Monday and Our Lord said that the Smith would have money at the door every Monday morning. The tinkers made the nails that were put in the Cross and that is the reason they are wandering around from place to place. Our Lord blessed the Smith and said he would never be without company or money.
