- I did not hear of any hedge schools in this district, but long ago school was carried on in farmers' houses. The teachers did lodge in farmers' houses. I do not know how they were paid.On some occasions Irish was taught, but the English forbade it to be taught. The teachers' attitude towards Irish was that in years to come it would very useful, and they tried to teach it when they could.Writing was done on slates. I do not know how the children were arranged in school. The teachers went from one district to another. In the National schools in early days the children had either to bring a sod of turf or money.
Patrick Lear told me all this.
