- According to Mr. Patrick Moore of Cartown Ballymakenny the custom held long ago of opening the window when a person died. The corpse was 'waked' in the barn on straw. The people who came to the wake house sat around on bundles of straw. Snuff was put on a saucer near the corpse and clay pipes tobacco were handed round to the men. The women used the snuff. Food & drink was given at the wake. Wake games were played and the wake lasted three, four, sometimes five nights.
