  1. Effect
    The famine did effect the District. There were a lot of people in the District before the famine. They still point out sites of old houses where their Grandfather and Grandmother lived before and in the time of the famine. Some of the potatoes rotted in the ground and others rotted in the pits. The seed was imported from other countries. They were not planted like grain but planted in ridges.
    The food the people had was meal, and those who had no meal eat water cress and nettles, and those who had hes killed some of them for food and sold the rest to buy a little meal. The Government did give a little relief but to late. They died in hundreds.
