- Long ago, the people did not wear shoes as early as now. Nobody wore shoes until they were about ten years old. They went barefooted Summer and Winter. There is a man living in Killigriffe now, who remembers his great grandmother. She spoke nothing but Irish, and if she wanted to go to Bailieboro, she threw the shoes over her shoulder, and carried them with her till she came near the town. Then she put them on, and on coming home again, she took them off, and carried them with her again. Nobody wore fine shoes, and small shoes were not to be found. The blacksmith used to make them, and each person gave in their size. They all got the shoes much too big for them so that they would do for a couple of years.
At that time, the shoes were twice as dear as they are now. Nowadays the young children go barefooted during the Summer, but they wear boots, or rubber boots during the winter. Nobody ever wears clogs in this district. - The children begin to go barefooted when the warm weather comes in May. They feel very(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
