Pigs, when sold, are marked with crease from the axle, that is when farmers buy from each other. When an animal is sold the halter is given away with the animal.
The Great fairs of the year locally are the April and October fairs in Moate, and in Athelone the January horse fair. In Moate the Cattle and sheep fair is held on the first Wednesday of the month and the pig fair on the previous day. In October there is a special fair for sheep on the first Tuesday of the month then at that time the pig fair is held on Monday instead of Tuesday.
