- In about the year 1847 during the construction of the present Town Bridge an old priest watching the building operations entered into conversation with some of the English Engineers.
Trying to make a mock of the priest they remarked that it would not be as easy to stay the advance of the English troops on the new bridge as it was on the old one. The old Priest then answered "maybe so, but the time is not far off when Ireland will be free and there will be no British soldiers to cross the bridge."
