    the distance, and so happy were they that (they) cried out for joy, hence Ardkeenan. There is another large wood at Johnstown which is very valuable for timber.
    The land is very low and boggy, south of Athlone. It is drained by the Shannon and smaller streams which flow into it. After heavy rainfall the river overflows its banks and the lands are flooded, sometimes families have to leave their homes with the floods. Several people have been drowned in these floods.
    The people emigrated to America in considerable numbers from this district long ago. Some also went to England and some to Australia.
