    are believed to have passed through Athlone. There are several wells dedicated to St. Brigid in the locality. St. Ciaran passed Athlone on his way from Hare Island to Clonmacnoise.
    The Danes plundered Athlone and its monasteries and sailed past it on their way to Clonmacnoise. Their leader Tuirgesius is supposed to have been drowned in one of the lakes of Westmeath.
    In later times the families of O'Connor and O'Maol Sheaclain fought for possession of this town. Its castle was built and was always a bone of contention, at first, for the rival families of the district, and alter between the Irish and the English.
