- A custom which used to be observed in my childhood when I was living at Carrick-on-Shannon, but which has never been heard of here, was as follows:
Early in the evening, the man of the house would go out and pick up a fairly dry piece of cow manure. This he would knead into the shape of a cake, and leave near the fire to harden a little. He would also bring in a bundle of rushes. These we would peel and soak in melted fat of any kind.
The rushes then would be cut into lengths of about 6" and stuck at intervals here and there through the "cake". Each member of the family would name a particular candle as his own. We would then sit round watching the rush candles burning and keeping then snuffed. (The cake would be left on a plate on a table near the fire)
The candles were burned in honour of the twelve Apostles.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
