and which ever team would win they would get some sort of a prize. In olden times the rules were not so closely observed as they are today. It meant that the strongest and roughest team would win the game. The referee would not blow his whistle so often as it is blown now. There was a team in bruckla called the bruckla fuzilers and there was a team named the slieve-waiscoat, it belonged to Derryheelan and Kilmahon. They hurled in them days with old sticks cut out of a quick, the ball was the same as it is now. It was home made and home sown. The way they made the hurly ball was they got corks and tied them together with twine and then got a piece of leather and put it around the corks and sowed it.
I heard this from my Father aged 53 years.
