- In olden times the people ate many different kinds of food that we do not eat now.
The people in olden times had three meals in the day, the breakfast, dinner and supper.
The breakfast consisted of porridge and oaten bread, the dinner of potatoes and buttermilk on a fast day, and on the other days it consisted of cabbage, bacon, potatoes and buttermilk. The supper consisted of potatoes and buttermilk.
The breakfast was taken at nine o'clock, the dinner at twelve and the supper at eight o'clock after their work.
In olden times the people did about three hours work before their breakfast.
Long ago the people sat around a basket on the middle of the floor when taking meals.
The people mostly ate oaten bread and boxty. Oaten bread was made with water and oaten meal and left standing against a support called a baking stand to bake at the fire. Boxty was made with potatoes, flour and milk. It was baked in an oven beside the fire.
Certain foods were eaten on special occasions such as pancakes on pancake night, a currant cake on Hallow Eve night and eggs on Easter(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
