storm - driven sands. The Chapel at Killcavan and St. Kierans had been left without their Pastors. The Augustinians clinging to the hope of regaining possession of their monastery remained among the people of the neighbourhood and extended their ministry to them. About 1737 the one or two Augustinian Friars was given a small farm at Grantstown where they erected a thatched Church and dwellinghouse.
The ruins of the Augustinian Church Clonmines which was the parochial Church of the town, are well preserved. The Church stands quite close to the water-side and its lofty castellated tower must have been in by gone years an imposing edifice. The Tower is a very massive structure rising upon four heavy arches, its galleries supported by quoined vaulting. It is ascended by perfectly preserved winding stairways and is surmounted by two crenellated towers. From its tower the main portion of the Church projects eastwards and is lighted by a large gable filled with beautiful designed mullion work in red granite. The bold architraves of this and the West window and doors chiselled out of the same red granite constitute the most beautiful features of the building and are remarkably preserved.
