- Wrecked off the Keeragh Islands
in Ballytiegue Bay - South Wexford Coast on 20th February 1914.
The disaster evoked national sympathy and at the request of the Editor "Kilkenny People" Kilkenny, the following verses were supplied by the undersigned (then National Teacher at Revanagh Co. Kilkenny) and published in Kilkenny People (Dated 14 / 3/' 14) under title
The Fethard Heroes.i
All over the world the Irishman's known,
For his generous heart and heroic hand,
Well has he earned his title to fame,
On cold Polar waste, and on dull desert sand.
In many a battle, 'neath many a standard,
Has he helped the wronged stranger the foe to dispel,
In oceans unknown he has oft freely aided,
The wandr'er to safety from turbulant swell.ii
'Tis but a few days since he last showed the world,
What generous and brave Irish manhood can do,
He has shown an example of unsurpassed courage,
In the gallant behaviour of a brave lifeboat crew.
The brave little band led lives full of danger,
At once famous Fethard on our sea coast,
So Wexford the county of true Irish heroes,
Once more of her children has proud reason to boast.iii
The wild winds were raging, the sleet was most piercing,
Its shrieks and its moans were dreadful to hear,(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
