- Festival CustomsOn the vigil of Saint Martin a fat goose would be killed every year. The mistress of the house would the goose herself and then she would take the head of the goose and throw it over the house. On the feast the goose would be cooked and when this was done, the broth would be divided and put into jugs, then she would divide the goose. Then she would call each of her children and give them a jug of broth and a piece of the meat to carry to each poor neighbour in the district. This was all done in honour of St. Martin.Another ancient custom is described by Miss Flusk, who says, "when the harvest was over and the wheat ground into meal, my Grand-mother made a nice loaf in a pot oven beside the fire. This would be the first loaf made from the new meal. That evening before supper was served the fear-an-tighe taking the loaf went outside the door and striking the door three times in the name of the Three Persons of the Blessed Trinity prayed that hunger and want might not enter the habitation during the year.
