As most of the articles used were home made and hand made there was a market always at hand for nails as they were used in carpentry, building and such things. Women and children got employment at this work too and as the cost of living was very low those connected with this industry lived in comfort. The introduction of machinery for making nails put these workers out of existence
Nail-making by hand was a very slow operation. The iron was bought in long thin rods. It was then cut into strips of the length the nail was to be. It was next heated in the fire and hammered into shape with a light hammer. Like all handmade articles it was more serviceable than the present wire nail as it always got a firm grip on account of it having a number of sides.
