Stories, Songs and Ballads of '98

258Ninety eight is the year of the famous battles in this country. The rising took place at the Harrow which is about seven miles from Enniscorthy. The next battle was fought at Boolavogue where the chapel was burned by Yeoman. The well known songs of the present day are as follows:
"Boolavogue", and "Jacky come out of your Shore Hole". These songs are in connection with seventeen and ninety eight. Another song
" Kelly, the Boy from Killane" deals with the same period. It tells of a young giant from Killane named John Kelly to quote some of the words that shows us his marvellous physique "seven feet is his height with some inches to spare and he looks like a king in command". These words tell what a great man he was and it also says "ah my lads thats the pride of the bold Shelmaliers". This shows us how the people liked and respected him.Written by : Patrick Kehoe
