- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)Many mansions like Castlebore were burned at that time also. These mansions were owned by absentee landlord's. These landlords lived in England but they owned these mansions in Ireland.The Government had planned to put soldiers in these mansions but before they got time to do this, the castles were burned. The burning took place in May 1922. It took place on a dark night and the blaze could be seen for miles arround. There was nobody in the castle except a caretaker and he was told to get out, so no body was burned. This castle land was divided into small farms and when the Irish were evicted from these farms they said that the day would come when the grass would grow up to the castle door. And so it did.
