- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)man, an employee or a neighbour led the horse. This man wore a hat-band and scarf. If a corpse to go a very long distance, say 20 mile, a hearse from Carlow, Athy or Naas used to have to be got. The hearse was very big and black and roofed-in like a house or gipsy caravan. It was drawn by 4 or 6 horses. The relative paid £1 a horse for the use of the hearse (£4 for the 4-horse hearse; £6 for the 6-horse hearse)The hat-band and scarf was worn by all who attended the funeral of a rich man. The relatives of the dead man had the scarfs and bands cut and ready, and these were handed to the people at the house, and along the road, according as they met the funeral. They were made from white linen. There were about 4 yards in the band and three yards in the scarf. The band went around the hat, and fell down at the back, and often just touched the ground. The scarf went over one shoulder and knotted under the other arm(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
