- 1. St. Stephen's Day. The Wren boys go around on this day with a piece of a holly-bush or a haw-thorn-bush decorated with gaily coloured ribbons, in which they pretend is a wren. They go from house to house singing the following song:-
The wren, the wren, the king of all birds,
On St. Stephen's Day she was caught in the furze,
Although she is little her family is great,
Rise up landlady and give us a trate,
For it is money we want and it is money we crave
And if we don't get that we will put you in the grave."
2. Hallow-E'en. Ducking for apples was a favourite sport on Hallow-E'en. A tub of water was placed on the floor and an apple was thrown into it and the children in the house would duck down for it and the person that could it up in his mouth could eat the apple.
