- Long ago the people earned their living making baskets and tanning leather and making candles and weaving and spinning. Some of the old people around here made flannel and tweed and others had silk looms which never is used now. Others worked by making baskets out of small bits of thin sticks and would pull rushes and dip them in grease to make candles. There was a tan-yard in Croney Byrne and they had a Bank mill to grind the Bank to make the tan;
They had lime holes and went around to buy skins from the Butchers, then they put them in the tan holes and left them there for some time. Then they took them to make them into leather. The mill has not been used since fifty-two years ago.- Bailitheoir
