In making the flour bread, flour, baking, soda and buttermilk were used. There were thoroughly mixed in a basin. The bread being round in shape and baked in an oven. The oven was hung over the fire and live coals were placed on the lid. Oaten bread was made from oat meal and very hot water well mixed in a basin. It was made of square shape and was placed on a support in front of the fire to bake. This support was made of wood and stood upright. People did not eat later than nine o'clock.On Shrove Tuesday most people used pan-cakes for supper. Eggs were used on Easter Sunday. At Easter and Christmas and other feast days during the year, the flour bread contained raisins and currants. Before cups became common vessels made of wood were used and were called noggins.
