- Potatoes are grown on our farm. About two acres of ground are sown under potatoes each year. The amount sometimes varies. The land is not manured in any way before it is turned up. The most of the potatoes are sown in ridges. The ridges are made by means of a plough. In olden times wooden ploughs were used. The spades are bought in a shop. The potatoes are cut in splits before they are planted. The local people do not help one another sowing potatoes. The potatoes are first moulded and in a week or two they are sprayed. The boys pick the potatoes into buckets and put them in pits. The Arran Banners and the Kerr Pinks grow best in this district.
