    and therefore the guns could not be got or pulled to the Scene of the battle in time. These chains were supposed to have been stolen by a yeoman called Whicker at the request of the Parson's servant girl and dropped into Kealdra Lake. "For the want of a shoe the battle was lost" says the old story but in this case a battle was lost for want of chains to draw the gun wagons. The chains were certainly stolen that night by Whicker but I gravely doubted always that they were never thrown into the Kealdra Lake.
    Recently I picked up another account of this to which I attach a great deal of importance. It is thus:-
    The chains were stolen by Whicker and were hidden near the Parson's (West's) house. There they remained during West's time in office and only came to light in the time of his successor. When that worthy died an auction was held at which an Auctioneer who was also county surveyor for Leitrim County had charge of disposing of the effects
