- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)of men dig and the pickers come after them. Not so many pickers are required when spades are used. The digger is worked by two horses and only one man is required to look after them. The remainder are employed in gathering the potatoes which are scattered over the ground. Bad or broken potatoes are not put in with the good ones. The potatoes are best taken out with the spade but this is a slower method.
The Storage
When potatoes are taken out of the drills or ridges. They are brought into a shed and stored up for the Winter. The farmer is kept very busy looking after the potatoes and sorting them into heaps in the shed. Sometimes the potatoes are put in pits in the field and covered with rushes, with a layer of clay on top to keep out the rain. A drain is then dug round the pit.
