- Long ago some people grew fields of flax. It was very useful, as beautiful linen goods, such as table-cloths, sheets etc were made from it.
Ropes were also made out of the flax. These ropes were not like the ropes nowadays, as they were so well put together they would last for many years. Certain families round our locality earned their living by this rope making.
Basket-making was a great industry for miles round here. For white baskets, the sallies have to be boiled and then split to make fancy baskets.
Baskets for gathering potatoes are made on a hoop. First make a hoop. Then put in two centre ribs and weave the sallies through these ribs, fastening them tightly to the outer hoop. Add two handles and the basket is complete.- Bailitheoir
