St Stephens Day -
St Stephens day is called wren's day. The young boys go round to hunt the wren. They go from house to house with a wren on a branch of holly. They have a ryme about the wren that they sing at every house. These are the lines of it
The wren the wren the king of all birds
St Stephens day she was caught in the furs
Although she is small her family is great
Rise up ye ladies and gentlemen and give us a treat
Up with the kettle down with the pan
And give us a penny to bury the wren.
The people go round to gather the money divide it among themselves. The one that holds the money is called the woman and she gets a few shillings more than the rest.
