Long ago people made their own - candles, soap, flowerpots, baskets, and "besoms". They made their own candles out of the fat of sheep. They had rushes and sometimes cotton threads for wicks. The fat was melted, and the wicks put in the middles if the moulds, then the fat was poured in. These were long thin candles. Soap was made of melted fat, and wood ashes which were boiled together. Toilet soap was made in the same way but the juice of the alder berries was added to it.- Bailitheoir
