    by a fan-blast. There is a "blower" sold at a moderate price which is used instead of a bellows for this purpose.
    The "blower" consists of a metal casting or box having a wheel outside. This wheel has a handle fixed to its rim at right angles to the plane of the circumference. The wheel is about 18 inches in diameter. The axle of this wheel runs from side to side of the casting and, inside, there is a pinion or gear which meshes with a pinion on another axle which carries the "fan". The fan consists of a number of light metal vanes. When the handle is turned, these vanes are made to revolve rapidly and cause a "blast" of air which is led through a pipe. out and up under the centre of the bottom of the fire. Sometimes a flagged passage is made under the floor from "the blower" to the same spot under the grate, and through this the air-blast is forced by the spinning vanes. Ironmongers sell these "blowers" but many men make their own at little or no cost. The blower is usually placed in a niche in the wall at a short distance from the fire-place.
