  1. Long ago before the Hemphills came to S H and built the new house and long before that again, there lived a very rich man there. He was so rich and so miserly that he did not know what to do with his money. He had two fine strapping men for sons, but they were not misers like their old father. They wanted a bit of sport like all young lads so they often stole out at night when the old man was in bed, thinking that he knew nothing about it. The old fellow was as wary as a fox and guessed that the boys had not the same love for money night after night when he thought everyone was asleep and that no one could see or hear him because he lived in a part of the house for himself. One night when the boys were returning they saw the old man running his fingers through the gold and laughing over it. It was a moonlight night but the old fellow had a rush dip in the room lighting. The boys got so interested in the doings of the old man that they forgot he could see them outside as well as they could see him inside
