- About one mile outside Clonmel in the village of Marlfield there is a lake in the grounds of the old distillery. In this lake there is said to be another which resembles a dog. It goes through the water very quickly and eats all small fish. It is very rarely seen. From time to time men have laid traps to catch this animal but have failed. It is a great disappointment to fishermen in the locality because of the number of fish this animal destroys. Long ago when the Danes were in Ireland they were fighting the Irish near Clonmel. When the battle was over, a heavy cannon which was the biggest they had, fell into the lake, out on the nire. A man whom the Danesl called horse-hero was thrown into the lake with the cannon and drowned.
