- Old Schools:
1852 - One Hedge School in the parish of Clerihan. Patrick Cashin Master. Average about 50. Instructions always given at Mass, in both the English and Irish language.
In the early National Schools, 3 being in the parish, the teachers were Edmond Slattery, Thomas Wall and Bridget Ryan. Averages 50.
All the usual school subjects were taught, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, agriculture. No Irish spoken at that time. Writing done with pen, pencil and slab. Children arranged round the wall on benches and also in the desks. Blackboard used and map. Teachers paid by the parents both in money and in kind. During the summer months, the classes were held in the open air.
