The work they did was reading and writing and sums. The teacher's pay was gifts from the people. The teacher lodged in the houses around the district. The children sat round on stones in front of the teacher.
- There was a hedge school in the townland of Tonnyglasson. It was called Ballintea school. The school was out in a field in the Summer time and indoors in the winter time. A man named Master Gray was the teacher. He lodged with the pupils' parents.
