If a red-haired woman came into a house either while churning was going on it was considered a very bad sign.
Old women in some parts of Ireland whom the people called witches were also held responsible in some districts whenever there was a small yield from churning. In the district where I live there are still many people who believe in these superstitions.
In our house we make our butter in the old style, namely the churn, and churn-dash, and many a hard spell I get at this work. I consider it one of the hardest jobs.
