- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)as a means of light. They used to go to the bog and gather as much deal as they could carry. They used to split these sticks in thin chips and leave them to dry opposite the sun. After a few day's drying they would do as candles. Another method of light was a peeled rush. They used to peel the green skin off the rush and steep the flesh in melted tallow. When the first coat of dripping used to be dry they would dip it in the dripping again until the candle be round enough. These candles were used by the old people and they were glad to have them.
