- There are four or five ruins of castles in Cratloe and some of them are still occupied. The most popular one is Bunratty Castle. It was the first Norman Castle built in Co Clare by a Norman knight named Robert De Muscgros in the year 1248.A trench was dug around from the river at the north to the hill on which the old church of Bunratty now stands. From the Castle hill there is a view of the Shannon and the surrounding country. In the townland of Ballintlea there is a castle called Ballintlea Castle and it was once occupied by the McNamara Family, and a member of this family was a famous poet and when he was in a foreign country he wrote ”Ban Cnuic Eireann Oig".
