He was a man of great strenght courage and resource, and he and his followers were a source of terror to the English and their supporters up to the time of his death. He was hanged in Ennis gaol.On one occasion a cow the sole support of a poor widow was seized by bailiffs. Liddy hearing the story pulled from its roots a young ash-tree and went in pursuit. He knocked the bailiffs unconsious and restored the cow to its owner.Liddy was arrested and lodged in Ennis gaol. Ennis was at this time a town of low thatched houses. Liddy's followers entered the town and set fire to the part furthest away from the gaol. The townspeople and jailers rushed to put out the blaze. Liddy's men then entered the gaol and released their leader. (Mr R. Moloney, Newmarket)Sir Lucius O'Brien MP for Clare in Grattan's Parliament was chief of Tradraighe in 1778.An interesting link with the rebellion of 1798 is atill pointed out in Tradrai.
