   have preserved the ground where rests a prince of Ulster - one of the last princes of the Gaelic nation. This attempt on the part of the Co Council to deprive us of one of our places of historic interest puts the writer in mind of Mellifont Abbey. Standing near the Abbey is a mill and the stones from the Abbey were used in the building of the mill.

   To the credit of the O'Byrne clan it must be said that they did not sell the pass as their neighbours the O Tooles did. They accepted no English titles. Some of their descendents live in Glenamlure yet but are fast dying out due to " decline " ( or as modernists say Consumption )

   Glenmalure however will remain a place of inspiration. In the glen Erskine Childers wrote many of his books. He wrote them sitting on Michael Dwyer's chair. This natural chair is situated just above the present hotel in the middle of the glen. The exploits of Fiadh would suffice to make Glenmalure a place of undying fame but how doubly lucky is it when it also claims the famous firebrand Michael Dwyer.
