There are also great horse fairs at Mallow, Cahirmee, New Tipperary and others. The people do not pay going into the field. There are not any horses sold at our local fairs.     Local Fairs.
    The local fairs are held in Felthard. Some of the farmers bring their stock to the fairs of Clonmel Cashel or Cahin. The fairs are always held in a town now-a-days. In olden times fairs used to be held in Country places like, Kilnockin, Gracetown and Rosegreen. Fairs were held on a hill in Rosegreen in former times.
    The fairs held locally in former times in the country are now discontinued, on account of the place not being near a railway station, to send them on a train to the destination.

    When animals are sold luck-money is always given. When young horses are sold halters and ropes are also given. The principal local fairs are sheep fairs, cattle fairs, horse fairs and pig fairs.

    The cattle fairs are held in Ballygar the 18th of every month. The pig fairs are held on the Thursday before the 18th. About 16 years ago there used to be eight fairs in Ballygar during the year. There were no one held in May, September, November andn December. Cattle, sheep and pigs used be sold on the same day. They used to bring out the pigs at 2 o'clock in the morning and then come home for the cattle. There used be two fairs in Newbridge one time where the Chapel is built. The fairs were held on the 16th October and the 1st of May. The dealers marked the cattle with chalk.

    The local fairs are held in Tynagh, Kilimore, Portumna and Loughrea. There are eleven fairs held in Tynagh annually. There are thirteen held in Kilimore annually there are twelve held in Portumna and twelve held in Loughrea annnually. Fairs are held in towns now but long ago the landlords used tohold fairs in the country for their own business. There was such a fair in Newbridge but it has been discontunied for the last thirty years. All the local fairs are held in fairgreens. There is no toll now but long ago there used to be 2 and 4 paid on every beast that would be sold. When an animal is sold the buyer has always to get back luck money according to how the bargain is made When parties are making a bargain they strike hands and divide the difference in the money. When a horse is sold the halter is gien with the horse. Portumna is the great fair locally. Loughrea is also the great fair locally for bonhams and cattle.

    A fair used to be held in the district long ago. Fairs were also held in the towns. There used to be a fair held in Ranaughard long ago and there is a field there called Páirc an Aoinigh. The buyers used not go from house to house buying stock. Fairs were held long ago where no fairs are held now. Some fairs were put to an end because not there was not many cattle coming to them. When people go to fairs they have to pay custom on every beast that is sold. The people have to pay 6d for cattle that are sold and 2d for sheep and 6d for horses. When the people buy stock they give a little of the money back to the buyer. That money is called lucks money. When a buyer buys cattle he puts a mark on them because if he did not put a mark on them the seller could sell them again.

    Roscommon town is noted for its cattle and sheep fairs. It has also good pig fairs which are held in the beginning of each month. The ninth and tenth of November are the largest fairs of the year. There are two fairs held in Fuerty which is two miles from Roscommon and they are held on the road as there is no town in Fuerty. Some years ago there were fairs held in Ballinafad which is near Strokestown but the people used to fight and drink so much that the fair had to be abandoned. Ballinafad is not a town.     The fairs of this neighbourhood are held in Ballydehob. They are not held in any other place but in towns. Often the buyers go out to to the country before the fairs buying animals from the farmers.     two shillings to two and six on age cattle. It is called luck money. It was more or less an old custom striking hands when the bargin is made. But that custom is nearly abolished. Animals are marked with scissors on the flank. This custom is principally for cattle that are to be shipped. For home trade it is generally raddell that is used. There are no halters or ropes on animals at fairs now except billls. The rope or halter is given with them. The great fairs of the year are 15th August in Charleille 23rd February in Killmallock.
