He has not gone far when he was suddenly attracted by Jack O' the Lantern who came hopping out before him. He said "Ho, me fine fellow, you're trying to put a decent man astray but I'll show you." Then he chased Jack round the bog with a stick until clear day. When he would draw a blow at him, he would hop from under the stick and appear the next moment about 6 yds.away. So Micky returned home tired out after chasing Jack o' the Lantern the most of the night and could never get a blow at him.

    the second was not.
When Jack O'Brien died he went to Heaven. St Peter met him at the gates and of course he would not allow him to go in. St Peter told him to go to Purgatory but it is said when he got there he was told to step a little lower that there was a cheaper lodging house down below.
Down he went and when he got to the gates of Hell he saw the Devil and he got up a red poker and hit him on the nose and (hurted?) him and marked his nose.
So it is said that Jack went away and would not be left in anyplace. And it is said he is still roaming the world wit ha lantern hanging on his marked nose. Hence he is called Jack O'Lantern.
Anyone who follows him at night is sure to be lost and put astray.

One day the devil came to him and asked him why he was always cursing. Being so pleased with him the devil gave him a charm so that when he would set the charm he could tie anything. The devil also told John that he would have to come with him after a year. When the year was up the devil came for him and he said to him I won't go until I eat some thing. While the devil was waiting for him jack set the charm and the devil was tied to the chair so Jack would not let him go and he told Jack if he let him go he would leave him for another year. Some people are easily scared by Jack' o the Lantern. But Jack is in reality a harmless fellow. Legend tells us that in life Jack was known as John O'Brien, a blacksmith by trade. One day a stranger, to all appearances a gentleman, called at the forge to have a shoe put on his horse. Being pleased at the skilful way the smithy managed the horse - a high spirited animal he remained for some time in conversation with John. Before leaving he asked John if he would agree to come away with him at the end of a year. O'Brien consented whereupon the stranger told him to wish for anything and the wish would be granted. John being a bit of a miser wished that all the money in his pocket would remain there. Suddenly instead of the gentleman and his horse there stood before John the devil, a hideous wicked grin on his dark evil face.
