- According to traditions, still vivid amongst the people of Gleann Fhraoigh, Bearna na Gaoithe, was the scene of the operations of a band of outlaws, who fled to this remote spot from the disastrous battle of Ballinamuck.
Many a land agent, carrying his rackrents to Dublin, was relieved of his money, as the mail coach passed through Bearna na Gaoithe.
The name of the robber chief still lives in a mountain cave known as "Rory's cave"
There was a price on Rory's head and it is said that, on one occasion he was tracked to a small tavern, near Loch Talt , a picturesque lake lying at the foot of Cnoc Crommas, to the east of Bearna na Gaoithe. Rory fled, jumped into a boat, and was hotly pursued by the spy in another boat. In the middle of the lake(continues on next page)- Collector
