- The most harmful weeds growing on the farms in this district are ragweeds, thistles, dockings, dog-daisies, scutch, grass, chicken weed and spreading ash. All these spread rapidly but the spreading ash impoverishes the soil. Gorse is found on good land. Rushes are found on poor land.
Most of the herbs are found growing on the roadside and contain medicinal properties. Dandelion acts as a blood tonic.
Nettles made into nettle soup and nettle tea are a good cures for measles.
Garlic is a cure for consumption and colds.
Celery and bog-bean are cures for rheumatism.
Many of the herbs can be used as food for people and animals.
Dandelion is used as a food for rabbits, guinea pigs and chickens.
Turkeys can be fed on nettles and garlic.
Groundsel is good for birds.
Some of the herbs contain poison as hemlock, deadly night shade, leaves of rhubarb and poppies. Poppies can be used as a dye.- Collector
