  1. About the year 1850 Mr. Antony O Reilly was landlord of the town land of Ardlow, and through the extravagance of his family, he got into poor circumstances, which made it necessary for him to mortgage portion of his property. This he did by borrowing money from a man named Mr. Doughty from Moate in the County Meath, who at that time owned the lands of Cuilca.
    The mortgage covered that portion of Ardlow adjoining Cuilca and which was about half the town land. As soon as Mr. Doughty got possession he raised the rent on those who were unfortunate enough to come under him, to thirty shillings per acre. He collected it without mercy as long as the people were able to pay it. Which probably accounts for the ill luck which overtook him later; as he got wiped out not only out of Cuilca but out of Ardlow and his name to-day is scarcely remembered
    Seemingly about that time the then landlord of Ardlow paid off the mortgage and gave the townland of Ardlow to one of his daughters as her portion. This daughter married Matthew W. O Connor who
