  1. If we give away fire, butter or milk on May day we are supposed to give away our luck.
    If a stranger milks the cow on May day there will be no milk for the family before the year is at an end.
    "Guard the cattle from the fairies on the first three days of May by fire and flowers.
    Guard the house by a string of primroses across the door on the first three days of May. The fairies can pass neither over nor under the string."
    Sweep the threshold clean on May eve and sprinkle ashes over it. Watch for the first footprint in the ashes. If it turns inward it means a marriage - if outward a death.
