- The poor scholars were two young men who made up their minds to go off to seek their fortunes.They appointed the day they were to go. They were to meet at a crosswords.
One said to another to bring all he could get from his mother such as money and food. The two of them went to their mothers. One told his mother that he was going to seek his fortune. She told him she would give him a shilling, an old hen, an oaten meal cake and the blessing of God. While the other beat his mother, took two shillings two old hens, an oaten cake from his mother and she cursed him as far as she could see him. Then they met again one with his mother's blessing and the other with his mother's curse.
The fellow with the mother's curse asked the other what he had got from his mother. He said what he had got from his mother. He said "One shilling and an oaten cake and an old hen." Oh, he said I have two shillings, two hens and an(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
