- The most common forts in the district are the Boylan's fort, Mr Coyle's fort, Mr Mulvanney's fort, Mr Briody's fort, the Rourke's fort, the Fairymount fort and Atcheson's fort.
Mr Boylan's fort is situated in the townland of Cullow in the parish of Crosserlough and in County Cavan.
Mr Coyle's fort is in the townland of Latnadrona, in the parish of Crosserlough and in County Cavan.
Mr Mulvanney's fort is also in Latnadrona. Mr Briody's fort is in the townland and parish of Crosserlough and in County Cavan. Mr Rourke's fort is in the townland of Rassan, in the parish of Crosserlough and in County Cavan.
They are all in view of one another as they are generally situated on hills.
They are mostly all circular in shape and there is generally a clay fence with bushes or trees on it, round them. There are no caves under or about them that we know of.
It must have been the earliest inhabitants of Ireland who built these forts as dwelling places for they did not known how to build with stone and mortar.
The Danes were not connected with them in any way.
It is said that fairies live in them and that they are to be seen at twelve o'clock at night.
It is also said that they fix boots in the forts.
