- In this district potatoes are raised on a large scale owing to the fact that the farmers of the locality go in for the feeding of pigs. Great care must be taken when planting potatoes.
You can plant them either in drills or in ridges. When planting in drills the field had to be ploughed and harrowed. Then it has to be made into drills. Then the manure is spread and the potatoes are dropped and covered. When they come over the ground they are covered with more clay. This second moulding helps the potato to come up quickly. In ridges the potatoes are planted in three rows. Then when they are well up they are sprayed twice or three times with washing soda and blue-stone, to prevent a disease called blight, which attacks the stalk and injuries the potato.
