    The battle of the bridge was one of the fiercest in the whole campaign. On the brave defenders for a long hour rained stones and caman-blows; yet they held their ground undaunted - held their ground until the bridge, whose supports were all the time being attacked with axe and sledge and saw, was ready to give way; then young Toal and his Irish lads hastily fell back a moment before the structure - to the intense satisfaction of both attackers and attacked - totally collapsed, the crash as it fell into the burn being only drowned by the wild united cheers of both armies.
    But certainly the most exciting part of the battle was yet
