- Local CuresThe people long ago had cures for their ailments.
The cures they had for toothaches are gun-power and garlic.
The cures for chincough is (are) to give the child ferrets leavings or to hold the child over burning tar.
They used to cure rhumatism by rubbing nettles into the effected parts of the body. When people have the measles the cure for them is to dring asses milk.
The cure for taking out (thons) thorns is to rub a foxes tongue of it.
There is a holy well in Balla and a lot of people bring water out of it when the have ailments.
If they have sore ears or sore hand when they rub the water us on the sore it will cure it.
There are herbs growing in the land in our district called comfrey and it will cure boils cuts and stone-bruises by digging the roots and cleaning them and putting them to the cut. The cure for worts is to get a black snail and rub it on the (wa) wort and then tie it on a white-thorn bush and come to see it every day until the wort is gone.
There is a cure in a dead person's body also. If there was a deceased person and to rub the dead persons hand on the deceased person it would cure him.
