The mound from which this village takes its name is situated on rising ground in front of the road that dips into Tráigh Mór an estuary of Blacksod Bay and midway between Bun na h-Abhann agus Beál-an-Mhuirthid. People say that an underground passage about 500 slat. ar fhaid connects this mound with another mound in the centre of the village called Ráth Chriagán and is believed to be at one time the residence of a famous chieftain, whose name is not recorded. This Ráth has a surface of about 30ft and rises a few feet above the level of the surrounding land.
